About this route
Thomas Bain's dry-stone-walled gravel pass, opened in 1888, links Oudtshoorn and Prince Albert over the Swartberg range, part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The road is unpaved with hairpin bends supported by 130-year-old retaining walls. It reopened in June 2026 after major flood damage, with vehicle-size restrictions in force.
