About this route

The Sani Pass climbs from 1,544 m to 2,876 m over roughly 9 km of gravel switchbacks between the South African and Lesotho border posts, within the uKhahlamba-Drakensberg World Heritage Site. The lower approach from Himeville is tarred; the summit section remains gravel and legally restricted to 4x4 vehicles on the SA side. Phase 3, which would tar the final section, had not been confirmed as under way at the time of research (July 2026).
