About this route

Ongeluksnek Pass climbs about 1,000 vertical metres out of the Ongeluksnek Nature Reserve near Matatiele to the Lesotho border, at an average gradient of around 1:9 — among the steepest passes in South Africa. The track, built by the Transkei Roads Department in 1991 and renovated in 2009, is typically rutted and muddy and forms part of the Maloti-Drakensberg Transfrontier area.
